Problem with rate/pitch

I am a part of team, which has developed wrappers for the Cepstral TTS, using the java native interface, and have developed a plugin architecture using JSAPI. In java, I have generated an keyboard event, which will increase/decrease the rate. However, everytime I try to increase/decrease the rate or the pitch, while the text is being spoken, the system crashes. I was wondering if Cepstral has a word/sentence/phoneme boundary, which might lead me to conclude that I am dealing with a timing error?
